Effective Proofreading – So Our Writing Is Readable

One of the writer’s duties, is to edit his own writing. This editing is carried out after the writing process – so that the process of casting ideas does not get confused with the refinement of the script itself. Subsequently, editing was carried out by the copyeditor / proofreader.

One activity that was carried out in the editing process was proofreading. Namely dominoqq, efforts to find errors in the script – so that later it can be edited into a better script. The mistakes referred to here include misuse of punctuation marks, spelling, consistency in the use of names or terms, to word breaks – this is where learning syllables in elementary school (SD) used to be useful.

Sorry because I haven’t found the equivalent of proofreading in Indonesian, huh. There is siy, which calls it a read-test.

In general, the editing task is somewhat unique, indeed. One of them is playing the role of a “necromancer” who tries to find “what is not there”. For example, between sentences, paragraphs, or other parts of the text that don’t make sense, or are discontinuous or stop or don’t connect with other parts.

Proofreading Tools

What tools are used to proofread? For English-language manuscripts, there are Grammarly.com (can be extended to the browser and directly proofreading our manuscripts on Google Docs), Dictionary.com, Google Translate, Thesaurus.com, Oxford Dictionary. The last one I mention is my English-to-English 4th edition (2011) printed dictionary book.

In using these various tools, we need to identify language elements that are felt to be important in a language. For example, in English, this singular (singular) and plural (plural) matter is important to pay attention to. Misuse, can be sprayed by the Nazi Grammar; a term for those who reprimand / scold people who are wrong in using grammar. Even non-Nazi Grammarists pay enough attention to these singular plurals.

For Indonesian there are KBBI (Big Indonesian Dictionary) and PUEBI (General Guidelines for Indonesian Spelling, formerly EYD, Enhanced Spelling). All the tools mentioned above are tools in writing and editing.

In principle, language is a means of communication. The main point is not a matter of standard or non-standard to which we can refer to the equipment. However, the art of language is how to convey ideas with words and sentences that are understood by the two communicating parties.

It’s really interesting, if you pay attention to how we speak on social media. On Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, blogs, and so on, we often ignore standard grammar. However, what is not standard is not completely wrong, really. That’s a socializing medium.

The Importance of Grammar

Why is a written document almost obligatory to have good grammar? Because once it’s written there, we won’t know where it will spread. Not only documents, well-written blog content is also great for us to distribute the links anywhere.

For business actors, it is also obligatory to have a good grammar process. This is related to the professional image of the company. How serious a company is in executing a project / product, in a way it can be measured from its documentation and writing. For example, bid proposals, project reports, year-end reports, and other documents.

In some publishers, there are editors-in-chiefs who are targeted to seek out additional manuscripts from outside. This position is usually quite senior or sought after with experience. Because they must have a valid feeling and intuition of the business potential of a script. This profession is very little or no longer concerned with the grammar of a text.

By the way, some of us still confuse some of the professions that are often confused with one another: copywriter, copy-editor / editor / proofreader, and editor-in-chief.

Another word is composition. So how a text is structured: sentence length, number of lines in paragraphs, etc. so that it is coherent with one another and easy to read. Typography is one of the things that proofreaders must pay attention to. Writing that is too dense in words, is not necessarily full of meaning. It is the duty of the proofreaders to make these sentences effective. The shortest distance between paragraphs can also make it difficult for the reader.

Typography also covers how to use bullet points to convey our ideas. In line with bullet points, images can also be used to give beautiful compositions in our articles. In a medium that can be beautified such as blogs, typography or composition will provide high readability.
